How To Prepare Your Children To Vote

How To Prepare Your Children To Vote

The 2024 United States presidential election is not just about you; it is about future generations. What kind of nation will you leave to your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren? Proverbs 13:22 (AMPC) says, “A good man leaves an inheritance [of moral stability and goodness] to his children’s children….” In order to leave an inheritance of moral stability and goodness to your children, you must prepare them to vote. The following four steps will ensure that future generations understand the importance of voting and that our nation continues to be “one nation under God.”

1. Teach Your Children About the Importance of Voting

It is never too early to start teaching them about the importance of voting. When Jeremy Pearsons, son of Pastors George and Terri Pearsons, was a kid, he said to his parents, “If I could vote, I would.” Then he added, “When I can, I will.” His desire to vote came from his parents, who intentionally instilled that into him.

2. Teach Your Children About God’s Criteria for Leadership

God explains in Exodus 18:21-22 who qualifies for leadership within government: “But select from all the people some capable, honest men who fear God and hate bribes. Appoint them as leaders over groups of one thousand, one hundred, fifty, and ten. They should always be available to solve the people’s common disputes, but have them bring the major cases to you. Let the leaders decide the smaller matters themselves. They will help you carry the load, making the task easier for you.”

3. Teach Your Children To Vote for Those Who Represent Biblical Values

Spend time with your children comparing the party platforms to the Bible. What does the party platform say? How does that compare with what the Bible says? In addition, compare the politicians’ actions to the Bible. What did the politicians do during their term? What kind of decisions did they make? How do those decisions compare to the Bible? The Word of God is always your standard for voting. (Confused about where to find this information? We have an election resource page with all the info you need, from national races to local. 4. Teach Your Children About Covenants Made With God Concerning This Nation

In the 1620 Mayflower Covenant, the pilgrims left England for religious freedom. Upon arrival at Cape Cod Bay, they wrote, “In the Name of God, Amen. We, whose names are underwritten, the Loyal Subjects of our dread Sovereign Lord King James, by the Grace of God…having undertaken for the Glory of God, and Advancement of the Christian Faith…do covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body.” Other covenants include the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the ending of the Revolutionary War.

Why Is This Important?

By preparing your children to vote, you are teaching them to vote for leaders who will best represent the standards of God’s Word. You are investing in future generations and leaving a legacy that ensures that Jesus is Lord over the United States of America.
