A:

Music can definitely influence a person’s life for good or evil. Because of this, it’s important for Christians to evaluate the music they regularly allow themselves to listen to.

When examining music, ask yourself what impact it is having on your life and whether that impact gives glory to God. While style has very little to do with the biblical acceptability of music, the Bible does clearly reveal that words carry power (Proverbs 18:21), and few things have as much impact as words put to music. For this reason the lyrical content of music is very important and must be examined in the light of God’s Word.

First Corinthians 10:31 says, “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”  A similar message is presented in Philippians 4:8, “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”

In light of these scriptures, ask yourself if the music you are listening to leads to thoughts that are lovely, pure and of a good report. We know that when you are open and honest with the Lord in your music decisions, He will lead you to make right choices that are both enjoyable and beneficial!
