First and foremost, God hates divorce (Malachi 2:14-16). It is never His best, and the damage it does to families and children are the evidence.

God created marriage and intended for it to be a lifelong union. The apostle Paul taught that the marriage relationship is a demonstration of the relationship between Christ and the Church (Ephesians 5:22-33). When we stray from His plan, the results are damaging. That is why Jesus emphasized the importance and sacredness of marriage in Matthew 19:6, saying “What God has joined together, let no man separate” (NKJV).

God never said that marriage would be easy. It takes a good amount of work from both parties—each putting the other before themselves. Walking in love in all things toward a spouse is the key to a good marriage. Even if your spouse does not walk in love toward you, 1 Peter 3:1 says you can win over your spouse to obeying the Lord through your conduct.

No sin should be taken lightly, which is why it is important to view marriage through the lens of the Bible, not the permissions of the world. Biblical grounds for divorce are laid out in two instances:

  1. When one’s spouse is guilty of sexual immorality and is unwilling to repent (Matthew 19:8-9). In this case, divorce is permitted, but not required. Many have found healing and gone on to rebuild strong and happy marriages.
  2. When one’s spouse is not a believer and permanently deserts a Christian spouse (1 Corinthians 7:15).

We shouldn’t entertain the thought of divorce, and it shouldn’t be considered an alternative. Just as with every other blessing, we are to believe for a strong, lifelong marriage by faith. Faith in God’s Word can heal and restore even the most broken relationships—including the marriage relationship. He is the Healer!
