When it comes to certain lifestyle choices, as Christians, it is important to discern between absolute truth and what is a wise choice. The Apostle Paul said everything is permissible but not all things are beneficial (1 Corinthians 10:23). In other words, if something is not expressly identified in the Word of God as sin, it does not necessarily make it the wisest choice.

When it comes to movies or any type of media, rather than simply basing your choices on a rating, ask yourself if what is presented is something you’d like to fellowship with. In other words, do you want to spend time with people (even on screen) who are cussing, engaging in sexual immorality, disrespecting parents or promoting a spirit of fear?

It is important to remember that there is a spirit behind every movie—good or bad. Horror movies are demonic in nature, and have a spirit of fear and death operating behind them. Inviting them into your home is inviting them into your life. Most Christians find that rated-R movies contain far too much evil for them to find it enjoyable. Others believe PG-13 does not meet their standards. No matter what the rating, it is important to use discernment.

Here are some scriptures to consider as you make your decision:

1 John 2:15-16: Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world (NKJV).

2 Corinthians 6:14: Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? (NKJV).

Psalm 101:3: I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar. I hate all who deal crookedly; I will have nothing to do with them.

Proverbs 4:23: Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

James 4:4: Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God (NKJV).

Romans 12:2: And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God (NKJV).

There are many opinions about what Christians should or shouldn’t watch. Ultimately, do not let other people dictate your choices, and don’t judge others when they don’t follow your standards! Instead, ask God what He would have you do, and let the Holy Spirit be your guide. He will lead you into all truth, and His desire for you is to have the very best life possible.
