The purpose of dating for a Christian should be to find a life partner to marry. It should by no means be taken lightly or casually.

As such, it is important to approach dating prayerfully and with wisdom. With such an important life decision before you, seeking counsel from strong Christians—including parents, friends and pastors—will enable you to make that decision with confidence.

God desires for you to be joined with the right person who will share the same faith, support your faith, and live life alongside you according to biblical principles. Just as important as finding the right mate (see our tips HERE) is becoming the right spouse.

As you date, look for—and also seek to become—the following:

  1. A Christian should marry a Christian, not an unbeliever (2 Corinthians 6:14).
  2. The right husband or wife will not be easily angered (Proverbs 22:24).
  3. The right spouse will be patient, kind and not easily offended (1 Corinthians 13:4-8).
  4. The right spouse will want to remain sexually pure before marriage (1 Corinthians 7:2; Hebrews 13:4).
  5. The right spouse will not want to put divorce on the table—EVER. They’re in it for the long haul (Mark 10:9; Malachi 2:16).

Above all else, spend time with the Lord daily, and let the leading of the Holy Spirit be your guide.
