As born-again believers, we believe in the only, one true God—our Creator, our Redeemer, Father, Comforter, Teacher and Guide. He is Almighty God (Deuteronomy 6:4). The Bible tells us that God is a three part being (Trinity): Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Trinity is not something that can be totally comprehended with the natural mind, but must be received by faith (1 John 5:7). We worship one God who is manifested as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Let’s look at some things the Bible tells us about the Holy Spirit. We know from Scripture that the Holy Spirit is a person. He is the person of the godhead that points us to the truth of God. He doesn’t speak of himself but of the Father (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit is the One who indwells the believer (John 14:17; 1 Corinthians 3:16). Just before Jesus was to be offered up as our sacrifice, He spoke of the Holy Spirit and our need for a comforter, or advocate (John 16:7). Jesus also spoke of the Holy Spirit as our teacher (John 14:26). We also need help from Him when we pray (Romans 8:26).

In regard to worshiping God, Jesus said, “But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23-24).

To welcome the Holy Spirit into our worship services and to thank Him for leading and guiding us is appropriate. Just as we have worship songs we sing to Jesus and the Father, many songs that are sung today in the Church do welcome the Holy Spirit into our services.

Our Lord is one God and we worship Him in spirit and in truth. One old hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” puts it very well. Some of the words are: “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty. Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. Only thou art holy, merciful and mighty. God in three persons, blessed Trinity.”

We encourage you to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you how to worship God. Here are a few more scriptures for your study: Philippians 3:3; 1Chronicles 16:29; Psalms 22:27, 66:4, 86:9, 95:6; 1 Timothy 1:17; Revelation 19:5.
