The Bible instructs us to “pray always with all prayer” (Ephesians 6:18, BRG). Other translations say, “all kinds of prayer” or “different kinds of prayer.” The AMPC says, “with all [manner of] prayer.”
There is more than just one kind of prayer, and depending on what you desire from God, you it’s helpful to understand the importance of each one.
The Prayer of Faith. The prayer of faith is important because it is the key to having your prayers answered. You can’t effect Spirit-led change in your life and in the lives of those around you without faith. On the other hand, with faith, Jesus says, “you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.” Faith finds out what the Word has to say, prays in accordance with that Word, and believes regardless of outside circumstances. This kind of prayer depends on and trusts in the Word of God alone. It requires no other confirmation or affirmation.
The Prayer of Consecration. This is a prayer seeking God’s will when we do not know from His Word what His will is in a particular situation. It is making yourself available to do what God wants you to do.
The Prayer of Commitment. A prayer of commitment is when you purposely commit something to God. In other words, it is the intentional act of turning something over to Him. It is a dedication to Him, and also a commitment that you will no longer be worried or take on any care about what you are committing to Him.
The Prayer of Dedication and Worship. The prayer of dedication and worship holds a tremendous amount of power. It never says, “If it be Thy will,” but instead it is getting your will in line with God’s will to bring success into a situation. It joins you and God together, and aims you toward the same goal.
Prayer of Agreement. This is when two or three come together in agreement with God’s Word for a specific end result, according to Matthew 18:18-20.
Prayer in the Spirit. This is moving over from natural prayer to your heavenly prayer language and allowing the Holy Spirit to pray through you. It is for the purpose of edification and spiritually strengthening, especially when you don’t have the words to pray.
United Prayer. United prayer is joining together in one accord with other believers for a specific purpose to make your requests, based on the Word of God, known to Him.
Prayer of Supplication. This is a humble and earnest request or petition, generally for the one praying. It should be specific and according to the Word of God.
Intercessory Prayer. Intercessory prayer is making a request for another or a standing in the gap between someone and the judgment coming upon them to allow them an opportunity to repent.
