Sin that has become a habit can feel like an impossible mountain to climb. But here’s what you need to remember—when you were born again, you instantly became an overcomer (1 John 5). You are an overcomer. That’s who you are. That’s what you are.

The devil would give anything he’s got to keep you from finding that out. Jesus already overcame him for you and gave you the authority to knock him down anywhere, anytime. All you have to do is pull the sword of the Spirit on him.

As an overcomer, you can take some steps to get rid of that sin once and for all—no matter how bad it is and no matter how long it has been there.

1. Repent. If you haven’t already, take it to God, tell Him what you did, and ask for His forgiveness. If you’ve already repented, make sure you’ve also taken the important step of forgiving yourself. It’s key to overcoming. When you repent, you’re making a commitment to turn and go the right way. There’s power in repentance because when we confess our sins to God, He is faithful to always forgive and cleanse us from the sin (1 John 1:9).

2. Decide not to sin. Can you really do that? Yes. And it works. This is a part of repenting, which means to turn around and go the opposite direction. There are many testimonies of people supernaturally and instantly overcoming things as addictive as alcoholism and smoking cigarettes just by making a decision to stop by faith. You can decide by faith to hate it—even if your flesh likes it. Then say it out loud: “I hate it!”

3. Don’t try to do it in your own strength. If you’ve already tried this, you know it doesn’t work! God doesn’t expect you, nor does He want you, to do this alone. He wants to help you. Find scripture that covers your situation and fight the good fight of faith with the Word of God. Don't try to fight the faith fight without the Word. Pray daily and turn it over to Him. He cares for you.

4. Expect the devil to show up. Do you really think he’s going to let you off that easily? He’ll show up, but we have instructions on exactly how to get rid of him. James 4:7 says, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” How do you resist him? You talk back. Don’t let him get into your thoughts. If you get a thought that says, I really want a drink. I really want to look at that. I want to cuss at someone, you answer it out loud. You say, “No! I’m not doing that. Get out of here, devil, in the Name of Jesus!” He’ll leave. And…he may come back. Just keep resisting. He’ll eventually have to give up.

5. Don’t isolate yourself. Sometimes shame and guilt keep us from seeking support. Don’t let pride get in your way. It isn’t worth it. Remember, “all have sinned and fallen short” (Romans 3:23), so you’re not going to find any nonsinners out there who would have a right to judge you. Seek accountability and support from the Body of Christ at your church or with a Christian counselor or a friend. The devil uses isolation against us.

You already have the faith to overcome sin! So, use it. Get into the Word of God and develop your faith. And if you’ll allow us, we’ll be honored to stand with you in agreement through prayer. Please don’t hesitate to call us at 817-852-6000.
